How safe is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is completely safe; it is natural and works with the way that the mind naturally operates. It is recognised by the National Health Service

More than just being safe, hypnosis is demonstrably effective at bringing about change, and has been shown to improve the function of the immune system and the digestive system and lead to more restful, recuperative sleep

According to the Health Education Authority:

'Research shows that there is more scientific evidence for hypnotherapy than any other complementary therapy.’

People usually experience hypnosis as very pleasant and relaxing

What does hypnotherapy feel like?

Typically it feels very relaxing and calming, like a deep massage for the mind!

Many people remember everything that is said in the session, but sometimes people are barely aware of what is being said (like when you are concentrating on a car journey and can’t remember exactly how you got from A to B)

In hypnosis, you are  focused and concentrating, but not in a strenuous way

It is with this focus and relaxation that connections are made to the unconscious mind, just like when you are falling asleep or half awake and you suddenly get a great idea or a solution to that problem!

In hypnotherapy how much control do I have?

In hypnotherapy you remain in complete control of your actions. You can come out of hypnosis at any time you choose

Why does hypnotherapy work?

Hypnotherapy is effective because it works in the way that the brain naturally works to make and break habits

The British Medical Journal states:

'There is good evidence from randomised controlled trials that both hypnosis and relaxation techniques can reduce anxiety.. They are also effective for panic disorders and insomnia....A systematic review has found that hypnosis enhances the effects of cognitive behavioural therapy for conditions such as phobia, obesity, and anxiety.'

Confidentiality?

I personally value confidentiality very highly. The information that you give me will remain confidential, unless I am required to disclose it by law, or in the unlikely event that not disclosing it could endanger someone else. I will keep minimal notes to help monitor the progress of any therapy and minimal contact notes, such as your telephone number in case a session has to be rescheduled. I will not disclose any information to any outside parties except with your permission or as mentioned above

How do I find the right therapist?

There are many therapists around and it’s important to find one that is right for you. Take some time to make contact with a few, and find one that you feel you can get on well with

Look for a therapist that is qualified with a nationally recognised body

Many hypnotherapists will offer a free initial consultation. This gives you great opportunity to check that you have found the right the therapist for you

What happens in a typical session?

Each session is different, and will be geared to your individual needs, however there is a general pattern that is followed

The first part of the session involves setting goals for the therapy, and agreeing how to achieve them

After a discussion, you will be invited to relax and listen to the therapists voice

Everyone experiences this trance like state that results in a different way

It is usual to become very relaxed and some people experience a different perception of time, thinking that they have only been relaxing for a few minutes, when it is a longer time

At any time you are able to wake up if you wanted or needed to

The hypnotherapy is tailored to your individual issues, so if you are very nervous before an exam, for instance, the therapist might ask you to remember a time in your life when you felt calm and confident and to rehearse these feelings in your mind. Mentally ‘anchoring’ these positive thoughts and memories and making connections and associations when you are deeply relaxed but focused, often helps in ‘waking’ life

To reinforce the changes that you make during the session we may agree things to do after the session

How much will it cost me?

My first session to discuss hypnotherapy and the issues is ALWAYS FREE

I offer this to you to welcome you to my practice, address any concerns you have and enable you to come relaxed to the next session

Subsequent sessions are £45, which represents really good value when compared to other therapies and services

Many people benefit from 1 or 2 sessions, perhaps up to 5 but you only commit yourself and your money, session by session, so you are in control

I just ask that you let me know ASAP if you have to cancel and that you recommend me to your friends!
